We’re back to finish up our countdown of Drawing magazine’s ten greatest covers in advance of our 10th anniversary issue, set to be released later this month. We enter the top half of the list with an entry from America’s heartland:

Drawing, winter 2005

The great Regionalist artist Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) provided the cover of our winter 2005 issue. The image is titled Wilbur Leverett, Galena, Missouri and is drawn in a mix of graphite, pen-and-ink, and sepia wash.

“Benton renders this likeness with a casual style yet with such perfect balance and proportion,” observes Nancy Pollock, Drawing’s senior production designer. “I watch his earnest expression and wonder about the song he plays. Is it sad? Painful? Both?”

We hope you enjoy pondering this mysterious musician. And to receive your full dose of terrific art on  a regular basis, be sure to subscribe to Drawing. And check back soon for our top four covers!
