Pastel Showstoppers | Andrew Hemingway

2126.jpg
In the June 2010 issue of The Pastel Journal (available here), we reintroduced the pastel still life work of British painter Andrew Hemingway. Writer Ken Gofton, who had the interview with Hemingway, mentioned in the article that the artist was planning to do some large-scale paintings in Switzerland, a country that has attracted his interest since boyhood holidays there (it’s also the home country of his wife). Now you can see the results of Hemingway’s efforts in an exhibition currently on view (through November 27) at the Brian Sinfield Gallery in England. Visit the website here.

If you find the departure from still life to grand-scale landscapes astonishing, here’s what Hemingway had to say: “For me to be really passionate about something, it has to be a challenge; it has to be difficult. Really, it comes down to this: What we know is interesting, but what we don’t know is even more interesting.”
