Breathe life into painting

Being alone in your studio with a canvas, a photo, and too much time provides an all-too-tempting opportunity to add endless detail and lose the essence of your subject. My remedy for this is to paint from life as often as possible. Painting a live model in a single setting leaves little room for finessing. I observe the essential elements and get them down on canvas in the simplest terms. This forces me to look before I paint.
