Excite Them With Edges

Hard and soft edges provide a valuable contrast in artwork. Because they’re sharp and defining, hard edges tend to grab more attention than their softer counterparts. So I generally try to concentrate the hard edges close around my center of interest. Then I place soft edges in the more ambiguous areas away from my center of interest, where they can suggest less obvious compositional elements without conflicting with the harder edges of my subject. This strategy allows me to avoid confusion and direct the viewer’s attention to the right place.
