Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia

On assignment for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Weekly, a leading newspaper of the day, with graphite and paper in hand, a group of mid-19th century artist-reporters set out as eye-witnesses to capture the events of the Civil War. What the artists brought back told America the stories of the battlefield—from violent attacks and somber acts of worship to the soldiers’ proud induction ceremonies.

What you’ll see:
Approximately 90 drawings from the privately held Becker Collection are presented, many of which have never been published. This exhibition coincides with the United States’ Civil War Sesquicentennial.
