Finding the Lights in Your Photos

It is easier to see the shapes and patterns of light in a reference photo if you hold the backside of the photo to a light, or put several sheets of tracing paper over the photograph. Do this when you are selecting a reference and deciding where to crop it. Look for a pleasing arrangement of light that flows through the image.
