Hans Burkhardt: Within & Beyond the Mainstream

Untitled (ca 1964; oil on canvas, 42x32) by Hans Burkhardt

Hans Burkhardt’s (1904-1994) expansive career and influence in Los Angeles are the focus of an exhibition of paintings and drawings entitled “Hans Burkhardt: Within & Beyond the Mainstream.” The exhibition, part of the Getty initiative Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, runs through December 24, 2011 at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts.

Click here for an excerpt of the essay from Jack Rutberg’s recent publication, Hans Burkhardt: Paintings of the 1960s, which draws our attention to the importance of Burkhardt’s role as an artist in the ‘60s and a history that, as Rutberg notes, “particularly in Los Angeles – is often obscured in a mythology informed by the emergence of pop art and minimalist tendencies.”

Here, you’ll see a video filmed at the opening reception that offers a fine introduction to Hans Burkhardt, with commentaries from critics, artists and art historians in attendance as well as a brief overview of the gallery installation of this current exhibition.
