WOLF AT THE DOOR BY BY ROCKY HAWKINS
For centuries wolves have captured the human imagination.
Think werewolves, she-wolves, and the wolf in the Little Red Riding Hood tale.
And then, of course, there’s the proverbial and ominous “wolf at your door”—a
metaphor for the creditors who come calling during bad times like a recession. But
the wolf also is a gorgeous creature, and a symbol of the wild and the free.
This month Visions West Gallery in
legendary animal of myth and lore with a show titled HOWL. The presentation
features paintings by 15 contemporary western artists. From Rocky Hawkins’
colorful abstractions to Matt Flint’s moody mixed media pieces, these are
wolves to welcome at your door. At the opening reception on Thursday, Matt
Skoglund, an advocate for the National
Resources Defense Council (an
environmental action organization) gives a talk about the wolf and its habitat.
A portion of the proceeds from art sales benefits the organization’s efforts to
protect the wolves. The show runs through May 5. –Bonnie Gangelhoff
