In the Business of Art

You’re at a party, a gallery opening or a workshop and someone asks what you do for a living. Will you say you’re a banker (or a mother or a doctor or a real estate agent) or that you’re an artist? It’s your choice. Suggestion: Get in the habit of introducing yourself as an artist first. Chat about your artwork, your subject matter and your exciting process. Should you want it, there will be plenty of time later to chat about your other job. And when you exchange business cards? That’s right. Have your artist business cards handy.

Stephen Quiller lives in Creede, Colorado, with his wife Martha and their two children, Christopher and Allison. He’s a member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Society and the Society for Painters in Casein and Acrylic, and is listed in Who’s Who in American Art. Quiller conducts workshops throughout North America, has produced numerous video tapes and has published four books, including A Painter’s Guide to Color (Watson-Guptill). His work is available at the Quiller Gallery in Creede, Colorado and the Mission Gallery in Taos, New Mexico.
