Printing Without a Press

Any person can create a monotype without a press. Simply use your hand, a wooden spoon, rolling pin, brayer or baren (a round, smooth flat pad) in place of the press. All that’s required is the paint or ink adheres to the paper.

You can purchase scrap Plexiglas at minimal cost from hardware stores, or use glass for the plate. Individual leaves or plants can be brushed with the water-based ink or paint, such as tempera or acrylic. You can use almost any type of paper and the tools described above to do the actual printing. Try printing the plants without reinking. Be spontaneous and open to the expected.
