Know Your Key Points

When doing a quick sketch of a figure, start by marking these eight important points on the body: the shoulders, the hips, the points where the thigh bones attach to the pelvis and the knees. Then imagine a horizontal line going through each of these pairs. The different angles formed by each pair of points as the body shifts positions will help you quickly capture the gesture, or pose, of the figure.
