Masterpiece Found

Recently, the Museo Nacional del Prado announced the discovery of a previously unknown work by the artist Georges de La Tour (French, 1593-1652). The painting, depicting St. Jerome reading a letter, is considered exceptionally important as one of only a few known works by the French painter, and only the second to be discovered in Spain. Given that there’s little documentary evidence to point to the painting’s creator, the attribution is based on similarities to other signed works by the artist. Subtle details like the brushwork of the hair and the light touches made with the point of the brush make experts quite certain it was created by the hand of La Tour.
