When shading with any type of graphite, remember that it’s a crystaline material that tends to be shiny by its very nature. When you rub those particles wiith a heavy hand to develop dark shading, you’re effectively polishing the graphite. So if you get an unwelcome sheen in your darker shading, you have three options: You can decide not to shade so darkly, to use a softer lead, or to reduce the shine appreciably with some kind of matte spray such as a fixative.
