Stroke of Luck

Wildlife painter John Banovich describes his brushstrokes as fairly impressionistic, and he says he achieves a realistic look not by overworking the paint, but rather by painting with the largest brush and least number of strokes possible. “My goal is not to paint every hair on that elephant, but to break my subject down to its essence. My ultimate goal is to paint a painting with one stroke. If I ever do that, I’m retiring,” he says.
