The snow is flying past my window, and my normal view of the
Rocky Mountains is shrouded in grey. My
thoughts leap ahead to summer with suggestions for some great art events as
well as scenic destinations to visit when the sun shines.

The ski resort town of Telluride
is the place to be over the July 4th weekend. The annual Telluride Plein Air show is set for
July 3-4 at the Sheridan Opera House Courtyard. Plein-air painters converge to
paint the town and surrounding areas and then sell their breathtaking scenes.
On July 4, the locals put on an unforgettable parade that features armies of Telluride
babies, toddlers, and even dogs in costumes.

A second ski destination, Crested Butte, is the setting for
the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters
show and sale. Here’s another beautiful Colorado
locale to visit and a stellar place to purchase a magnificent western landscapes
on view at Oh-Be-Joyful Gallery July

The second annual SOFA
show returns to Santa Fe
July 8-11. The event brings together top fine art craft galleries from across
the country to display their wares at the city’s convention center. Expect to
see unique pieces in glass, fiber, clay, and wood by gifted artisans. Last
year’s inaugural event attracted 10,000 visitors.

On August 20-21 the annual Indian Market unfolds in Santa
’s downtown plaza area. This is an amazing sight
with a sea of people and white tents as far as the eye can see. Inside the
tents, among other Native American artworks, there’s an array of Navajo, Hopi,
and Zuni paintings, sculptures, and a treasure trove of eye-popping silver and
turquoise jewelry.  Bonnie Gangelhoff
