The art of the deal

Inevitably a potential buyer will ask for a discount or make you an offer for a painting that’s below the marked price. In general, I’m not in favor of accommodating these requests. Practice saying “This is a $400 painting,” which speaks to the value of the painting. Avoid saying “I’ve priced this one at $400,” which sounds more open to negotiation.
If you’d like to make the deal a little sweeter for a customer, consider adding something instead. For example, perhaps you could give the buyer the sketch you used for the painting, a package of your artwork note cards or a small drawing. This way your artwork retains its value—and you have a happy collector.
