Up to Scratch

Did you know your brush handle can be the ticket to creating great textural line work? My favorite way to use this texturing technique is to start with an underpainted wash and let it dry thoroughly. Later, I go back and put down a darker value over the initial wash. I let that set for a moment before using my brush handle to “push” away the wet paint in a linear fashion, allowing the lighter underpainting to show through. Of course, you can vary your results depending on the wetness of the paint, the width of the brush handle, and the type of line or mark you choose to make.
