Using an Erasing Template

Use a craft knife to cut a variety of thin grooves out of an index card. Then use the card as an erasing template by holding it firmly over your drawing and erasing the exposed area using the sharp edge of a smudge-proof eraser, such as a Pink Pearl, available from any art or office supplier.

See how Phil Metzger uses an erasing template to create detail in rendering a tree in “Going Into Detail” in the December issue of The Artist’s Magazine. See what else you’ll find in this special Competition Issue here.
