Wash With Gouache

Gouache presents you with the opportunity to create a unique texture. When it dries, the pigment lies on the surface in a thin layer that can be lifted off for a different kind of “drybrush” effect.

To try this technique, apply an initial wash of gouache, then spatter the painted area with clear water. Allow the water to sit for a minute or two to dampen the pigment. Next, using a large, soft brush, lightly but quickly stroke over the area. The brush will lift the pigment off, leaving a soft, feathery edge. The texture, caused by the splayed hairs of the brush, becomes more pronounced with repeated strokes.
