Way Out West: It’s Award Season

Alta Lakes (oil, 20 x 24) by Joshua Been

It’s show time in the West, where annual plein-air
gatherings and museum exhibitions bring together top artists from around the
country. Over the weekend Michael Godfrey from North
Carolina
took home top honors at the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters show and sale held in Crested
Butte, the popular Colorado
ski resort. Earlier this month Colorado-based Joshua Been won Artists’ Choice/First Place at Telluride Plein Air for Alta Lakes
in yet another scenic ski town, Telluride, which also turns into a painter’s
paradise in the summer.

Meanwhile at the Spring Salon held at Utah’s Springville
Museum of Art
Jeffrey Hein, was awarded Best in Show for an amazing
painting, Consumed. The large-scale oil painting by the Utah-based
artist features piles of junk, including dart boards, computer keyboards,
purses, and blue jeans, among other things. A human arm peeks out ominously from
the mass of consumer goods. –Bonnie
