Creativity Workshop: Meet the Winner

In the October 2010 issue of Watercolor Artist, June Rollins
challenged artists to capture the character of weathered subjects by
beginning with a rough start and finishing with rich, textural details.
Now find out how readers responded to her call. The “editors’ choice”
and the winner of our prize (a six-month subscription to online video workshops, plus $50 worth of North Light
?ne art books) is Deborah VandenBloomer of Greenville, Wisconsin, for her painting, Latch (pictured above).

The artist remarks of the painting process, “I started with a loose wash
and after that dried, I masked out the latch to define the barn boards.
After removing the mask, I applied a glaze of color to establish an
undertone to the rusty latch. After that dried, I then used a sea sponge
to apply mask to the latch. I glazed over the latch a couple more
times, removing a little mask with each layer, and finished the piece by
adding the shadows. I love finding new ways to create an added
dimension to my paintings.”

Congratulations to VandenBloomer and to all those who entered their
work! For details about the next Creativity Workshop challenge, or to
