The August issue of Harper’s magazine features paintings by artist and war illustrator Steve Mumford, who draws great inspiration from the war illustrator, Winslow Homer. You might remember Mumford from our August 2007 issue, wherein we published paintings from his 2003-2004 trips to Iraq and excerpts from his book, Baghdad Journal.
“I don’t think art should be pigeonholed as painting pretty pictures in the studio,” he said. “War is one of the most meaningful things in society. I think it’s important that artists be involved.”
