March 01, 2007
by Martha Newfield Elberon Beach (pastel, 20x16) by Anna Wainright
This is a beautiful painting, but it lacks focus. Perhaps the area in the foreground around the little gull could be brought up for a focal area. The waves are nicely handled, but need to be broken up more to prevent repetitive horizontals that lead the eye out of the painting. Downplay the strong contrast of the white foam and the dark blue of the under wave on the edge of the painting and allow the most dramatic wave action to be in the center of the painting.
You can inject more visual excitement into your blue and brown tonality by introducing some warmer color into the painting such as orange (blue’s complement). Try adding orange into the brown rocks and into the beach sand, as well as some subtle pink or orange into the light on the water. I like the rock forms—they introduce another shape into the painting. I would, however, like to see the rocks made larger and more interesting. |
