Choose the Right Surface for Your Next Watercolor

With so many watercolor papers out there, how do you choose the right one for you? According to Birgit O’Connor, it’s all about identifying surfaces with qualities you want (see her demo above). “Notice how the hot-pressed paper tends to create more backwashes,” she says. “The 140-lb. cold-pressed paper has the most even coverage. The 300-lb. cold-pressed paper has more texture than the lighter cold-pressed paper. The rough paper has the most texture.” In the latest digital download from Watercolor Artist, O’Connor gives you the skinny on all the important terms and demonstrates more key differences to help you pick the right surface for your next painting.
