Tips for Wet-Into-Wet Wash

  • When you start, the paper should be completely saturated with water.
  • Mix more color than you expect to use.
  • The wet surface will dilute the application of paint.
  • Tilt the drawing board to help the flow of paint.
  • As the paper begins to dry apply the next wash. The brushstrokes will be soft and more contained to an area.
  • Colors can be mixed either on your palette or on the paper.
  • It is important to clean the edges of the wash or painting to keep unwanted moisture from running back into the wash.
