Using a Grid

Because it divides your subject up into smaller, easier-to-understand sections, using a grid to enlarge or transfer a drawing can help improve your accuracy and perspective. But sometimes—especially with complicated drawings—following the grid can be difficult. To help keep track of where I am in a drawing, I lightly mark an “x” on my original over each grid square as I finish transferring its lines. This way, when I look from my subject to my drawing, I can quickly refocus on the next section.
