Abby Lammers

RESIDENCE: Rochester, N.Y.

BACKGROUND: I have a fine arts degree from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. I spent 13 years in advertising as an art director, which I think had a big influence on my work. I?m now a full-time working artist and I do a little teaching as well.

ADMIRE THESE ARTISTS: Edward Hopper, N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Fairfield Porter, Winslow Homer, Edward Degas, Richard Diebenkorn, Sondra Freckelton, Jack Beal, Janet Fish, Philip Pearlstein and Wayne Thiebaud.

MEDIUM AND SUBJECTS: I work in several media including watercolor, acrylic, casein and gouache. Recently, I?ve started playing with oils. My typical subject matter consists of landscapes and still life.

Space Invasion, Orange (acrylic, 30×22) by Abby Lammers was a finalist in the 2004 Art Competition. To view more of her work, visit www.abbylammers.com.

MY VIEW ON COLOR: My color mixing is based on the color wheel and color theory along with what I observe from nature. Typically I?ll start by producing a piece using local color. This practice gives me an opportunity to become more familiar with the subject beyond the initial value studies and detailed drawings I do. Next, I?ll try more personal interpretations of the same subject by varying the palette choices. Switching to a different value pattern may also come into play. Usually my focus shifts towards an interest in brighter colors and color relationships although I fully realize using color close in value and intensity tends to flatten the desired spatial illusion, which becomes a secondary goal. I think it?s interesting how the placement of each color is driven by what has been applied previously or next to it.

MY TYPICAL ACRYLIC PALETTE: Cadmium yellow light, Hansa yellow light, cadmium yellow deep, cadmium orange, transparent pyrrole orange, pyrrole orange, cadmium red medium, naphthol red medium, quinacridone red, dioxazine purple, ultramarine blue, Anthraquinone blue, phthalo blue, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, turquoise, cobalt turquoise, phthalo green, permanent green light and titanium white.
