Sam Goodsell on Capturing Character

Andrea (34×60) by Sam Goodsell

For figure artist Sam Goodsell, capturing the character of a sitter is always the goal. “Getting the drawing right is important,” he says, “but what’s most important to me is what the painting is saying.” The answer, he points out, isn’t taking a million hours of anatomy courses. It’s not focusing on mechanics alone. “You just have to really look, and then look more,” he says. Goodsell is among the four pastel artists included in a special “Faces + Figures” feature in the October 2010 issue of The Pastel Journal. For a sneak peek, click here.
