In the April 2011 issue of Watercolor Artist, Marilynn Derwenskus challenged readers to find new beginnings. We are now pleased to announce that the editors’ choice and the winner of our prize (a six-month subscription to ArtistsNetwork.tv online video workshops, plus $50 worth of North Light ?ne art books) is Lynn Millar of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, for her painting, Street Cafe (pictured above; watermedia on paper, 11×15).
Millar remarks of the painting process, “I began this painting as a demo for a watercolor class I was teaching. I washed water over areas of the page. Then I laid a doily on the paper and sprayed watercolor over the page in several colors. I cut pieces of white tissue into squares and dyed them with watercolor in some of the same colors I sprayed. When they were dry, I added the dyed tissue onto the watercolor with acrylic medium. This was the end of the demo and I didn’t do anything else with the piece until I read the Creativity Workshop in the April 2011 issue of Watercolor Artist. The incomplete painting had always reminded me of a street fair so I thought of this sidewalk cafe in Adelaide, Australia with it’s big white umbrellas. I painted around the umbrella shapes after sketching them in with watercolor pencil. The result is Street Cafe.”
Congratulations to our winner and all those who entered their work! For details about the next Creativity Workshop challenge, or to learn how to enter your work for a chance to win the prize, click here.
