Creativity Workshop: Emergency Kit Responses

You’ll find Deborah Secor’s fun “Creativity Workshop” challenge to make the most of the circumstances life hands you in the February 2010 issue of Watercolor Artist. Now find out how readers responded to her call. The “editors’ choice” and the winner of our prize (a six-month subscription to ArtistNetwork.tv and $50 worth of North Light fine art books) is Andrew Palmer of Portland, Oregon.

Palmer has this to say of the challenge: “I was inspired by Deborah Secor’s article to make an ‘Emergency Inspiration Kit.’ I have always been envious of my wife’s ability to knit almost anywhere, while watercolor tends to take up a lot of space, so I decided to downsize and make a kit that could be used while sitting on the couch in the evening. Very little set-up was required and I have been experimenting by mixing gouache with watercolor.”

You’ll see Palmer’s winning painting Monument in Winter, along with pictures of his wonderfully inventive sketching kit below. Plus, check out our runners up, Donna Hughes and Erma Pierce, whose fine watercolor paintings, Autum at Alum Creek and Sunset caught our attention and appreciation.
