In the October 2009 issue of Watercolor Artist, M.E. “Mike” Bailey challenged artists to paint in a series and experience the liberation to be found in confinement. We are now pleased to announce that the editors’ choice and the winner of a six-month subscription to Artists.Network.tv and $50 worth of North Light art books is Nancy Standlee of Arlington, TX with her “Friends and Lovers” series of paintings.
Standlee shared these thoughts on the process: ”I didn’t work from actual photographs but rather from memory or life observance. These works have taught me to be more observant of couples in their relationships. Will there be more paintings in the series? Absolutely. I stopped by the hardware store yesterday and purchased some items to do more experimenting and to build on some of the steps I’ve created in this process to keep me loose. This approach of loose expressive abstracts has resulted in some unexpected and unplanned events in my paintings.”
We’d also like to share our heartfelt congratulations with the runners up in this challenge, Doreen Hackett and Wendy Sprague, whose paintings also appear below. Thanks to everyone for sharing these gorgeous watermedia paintings with the editorial staff!
