In the April 2008 issue of Watercolor Artist, Nancy Collins challenged readers to bring new energy to their work by experimenting with a process or a surface. “Learning through trial and error can be challenging and it can also reap unexpected rewards,” she said. “It’s all about finding what works for you—and running with it.” Artists from all over the country responded to her call and sent us images of experiments of their own.
The editors of Watercolor Artist are now pleased to announce the winners of our first Creativity Workshop contest: Marilyn Brown of Brownsville, Texas has won a $100 gift certificate to Jerry’s Artarama. Runners-up include Joyce Heuman Kramer of Cortez, Colorado, and Rodney E. Heckman of Boonville, Indiana. Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of these fine watermedia artists, whose paintings are published below.

In the June 2008 issue of the magazine, Wendy Hill challenges artists to update their painting styles by experimenting with new, spontaneous backgrounds. “Use a loose application of tools such as tea bags and coffee filters to stain your surface and create a spontaneous background,” she says. “Then take advantage of the design on the surface to define, intensify or exaggerate the subject of your painting.” To read the complete online article, click here.
