The competition is open to artists anywhere in the world. All works must be original. Compositions based on published material or other artists’ work are NOT considered original and are not eligible. Paintings executed in a workshop under another artist’s supervision or paintings based on another person’s photograph (even if copyright-free) are NOT eligible. Entries must be created primarily with water-based media (watercolor, acrylic, casein, gouache or egg tempera) on a surface created for watermedia (paper; illustration board; paper-mounted board; watercolor canvas; or clay-coated surfaces, such as Claybord and Aquabord). Mixed-media entries are accepted, but watermedia must be the dominant element. Employees of F+W Media, Inc., and their immediate families, are not eligible. Watercolor Artist reserves the right to reject work deemed unsuitable for publication or that does not meet above criteria. Work previously published at the time of submission to this contest in a national publication or receiving an award at a national-level exhibition is not eligible.
PREPARING YOUR ENTRY
You may enter online or you may mail all your entries in on one CD. All entries must be submitted as digital files. There is no limit to the number of images you may enter.
If entering offline via regular mail you must include an offline Entry Form. Please include a cover sheet with your disk. Indicate the file name, title, medium, surface and dimensions of each entry. Please include the title of the entry in the corresponding file name on disk. File names should include only letters, numbers and spaces. Incomplete entry forms and information sheets, and improperly named image files will be disqualified.
Image requirements for entries: JPG files (Please try to keep the file size under 5 MB to ensure proper uploading). If entering online, the viewing screen & thumbnail which you will see during the entry process is for general reference only and does not reflect the image quality that will be viewed by jurors. The file that you attach is exactly as it will appear to the jurors.
Note: All entrants should be prepared to be able to send a hi-resolution print-quality replacement file should their entry be among those selected as a winner. For publication in Watercolor Artist, these files should be 300 dpi when saved at approximately 8×10 inches (2400×3600 pixels), ideally, and 5×7 inches (1500×2100 pixels) at minimum.
Fees and Payment:
All early-bird entries (submitted on or before July 1) are $25 per image. Entries submitted after July 1 are $30 per image. You may send one check to cover all entries in a package. Or you may enter online.
Materials: CDs will not be returned (so have a duplicate made for your own files). Watercolor Artist will not be responsible for the loss, damage or return of any CDs submitted to the competition.
If you wish to receive confirmation that an offline entry was received by our office, please request a tracking number from your shipper. Checks may take up to 30 days after the final deadline to be cashed.
Early-bird entries must postmarked or submitted online by 11:59 EST on July 1, 2014. Entries for the regular deadline must be postmarked or submitted online by August 1, 2014.
Entries will be prejudged and then finalists will be chosen by the magazine staff. All properly prepared entries will be viewed and judged. The decision of the jurors is final.
All winners will be notified by October 31, 2014. The results will not otherwise be made public until they are published in the April 2015 issue of Watercolor Artist.
