Acrylic Painting Techniques for Different Effects

Learn How to Paint with Acrylics

Acrylic Painting Techniques

Learn the acrylic painting techniques you’ll need to paint an abstracted landscape like this one from Nancy Reyner

I love acrylics. Not only is the color so vibrant, but the medium itself is so versatile and the painting techniques so varied, that the possibilities are infinite, no matter what your subject. Love abstract art? Acrylics. Love lush landscape paintings? You can get the color mixing for fantastic greens and fabulous skies, water, and distant mountains. Want the effect of watercolor or oils? No need to go out and buy a whole new set of paints and brushes; you can still do it with acrylics.

Why acrylics, you ask? I can’t speak for anyone else, but I love the ability to work on smooth or textured surfaces, to completely cover the surface with an opaque color, or to use a glaze to get transparent layer and changing the color with subtle shifts. Acrylic can be a forgiving medium as well, perfect for beginners who are just learning how to paint with acrylics. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve messed something up, only to paint right over that section, once the previous layer is dry, and saved the painting as a whole.

And while the shelves in the painting aisles of the art store can be intimidating, what with all the products, gels, grounds, and tools, I have found the products that work best for what I want to do. There are plenty of acrylic painting techniques and possibilities to explore; why not start with a small collection and experiment a little at a time?
