Elizabeth Torak revisited and revised Peter Paul Rubens’s masterpiece, The Feast of Venus, by changing the cast of characters and transposing the action from a garden to a kitchen. By setting the story in a kitchen, Torak alluded to Venus’s original role as a goddess of the hearth. Here are some of her preliminary sketches for the giant Feast of Venus I (oil, 60 x 108); the entire process spanned the course of four years.
