Painting Animals in Pastel | A Gallery

Whether endearing or comical, impressive or fearsome, there’s no shortage of character to be found in the animal kingdom. That’s certainly part of the draw for painters Nicola Litchfield, Michele Illing and Mike Beeman, who often turn to dogs, cats, birds, cows or other critters as subjects for their pastel work. In the February 2015 issue of Pastel Journal, these three artists share insights on their approaches to the subject and what techniques they’ve developed to better capture not only the fur or feathers but also the spirited personality of an animal subject.
