Getting Real | Aurelio Rodriguez Lopez Pastels
For noted Spanish pastelist Aurelio RodrÃguez López, creating a heightened sense of realism is essential to the expression of his ideas. Whether painting portraits or still lifes, he deftly uses technique, light, color and detail to convey what he sees.
“I’ve always loved drawing and painting in a realistic manner, and though I had adventures in other styles, I’ve always returned to realism,” RodrÃguez López says. “In the beginning, I was inspired by the classics, and, during a period of time I spent in Madrid, I visited the Prado Museum on many occasions. Later, I was able to get to know the works of contemporary Spanish realists and saw important international realist art exhibitions that came through Madrid. I particularly remember one on American Realism in the 1980s that deeply impressed me. All this has contributed to consolidating my style, which, despite all influences, I try to make my own.”
