Averil Gilkes | Pastel Painting by the Sea

Averil Gilkes has lived in the English county of Devon, which can be loosely thought of as Britain’s Florida, for more than 40 years. She explains her attraction to the seascape as a fascination with atmosphere. “I’ve always been drawn to the fact that everything is constantly changing,” she says, “including the light, the weather, the waves and even the beach, because of the marks left by the tide or the way the wind blows the dry sand.”

One can feel her long-standing dedication to the seascape in her transportive pastel painting, which depicts glistening shores and rolling skies. Enjoy some of these scenes below, and read more about the artist in the August issue of Pastel Journal, available at northlightshop.com and on newsstands July 14.
