Embracing the Pastel Palette | Lisa Ober Still Life Gallery

“I’m turning cartwheels when I paint in pastel,” says Lisa Ober, recipient of Pastel Journal’s 16th Annual Pastel 100 Ruth Richeson/Unison Pastels Award. “I love them so much. I adore their immediacy and versatility. There isn’t any waiting for anything to dry, so it’s instantly rewarding.”

Discussing the crisp, controlled finish of her still life paintings, the St. Louis-based pastelist says, “I guess some of my pieces may look very detailed for this medium,” she says. “I’m drawn, pun intended, to that kind of a challenge. The pastels become an extension of my hands, and it’s almost a game trying to find a sharp edge instinctively. Yet, over time, that’s exactly what happens. You end up just knowing what kind of mark that chunky stick is going to make.”

For an in-depth look at Ober’s award-winning art and process, check out the April 2015 issue of Pastel Journal, available at www.northlightshop.com and on newsstands March 10. Her award-winning painting can also be seen in the 16th Annual Pastel 100 Competition slideshow.
