Pastel Paintings in Process | Mary Aslin

Different qualities of light inspire pastelist Mary Aslin, and they’re instrumental in evoking mood in her painting arrangements—particularly her floral still lifes. She prefers natural light, either from a window or by arranging her subject outdoors. Sometimes it’s the drama of warm, glowing sunlight, and other times it’s a cool, romantic, atmospheric light or soft, directional studio light that becomes her muse. Each offers its own mood and helps to tell a story.

Below are three in-process setups—and the finished paintings—that are the fruition of Aslin’s self-imposed challenge to create more mood, atmosphere and light in her still lifes. Learn more about the artist’s process in the October 2014 issue of Pastel Journal, available at www.northlightshop.com and on newsstands September 16.
