Pastel Pick of the Week | Celebrating Pastel and Young Artists in China

I was delighted to hear recently from Hong Kong pastel artist Isabelle V. Lim with news about the 1st China University Students’ Pastel Painting Exhibition, which opened on August 5th, 2014, at the
Hang Ming Shi Pastel Art Museum in Suzhou, China. The event demonstrates a growing enthusiasm for pastel in China, and–in this case–among young artists. Here is Lim’s account of the event:

“This event was organized by Suzhou Hang Ming Shi Pastel Art, which received support from
various art and educational bodies, sponsors and local pastel artists, as a way to fulfill the dream of
Hang Ming Shi, the Chinese artist who has been pioneering the pastel art movement in China.

“The organizers received 443 digital submissions from art students from universities all across China. The team of jurors was comprised of seven Chinese pastel artists who carefully inspected the original paintings. They voted for the qualifying 80 entries and an additional of 20 “outstanding pastel paintings” to be exhibited. The exhibition’s aim is both to promote the significance of pastel art and also to celebrate the youth.

“At the opening ceremony, Hang Ming Shi honored 12 Chinese art instructors and the 20
outstanding student-artists, each of whom received a cash award, plaque, certificate and pastel art
materials, which were donated by Suzhou University, a commercial sponsor.”

The exhibition will show at the Hang Ming Shi Pastel Art Museum through September 15, after which it will travel to Suzhou University Art College Hall, where it will be on display from September 17 through 27. Here are just a few of the exceptional pastel paintings by the Chinese students, who ranged in age from 20 to 27.
