Pastel Pick of the Week | Colorado Landscapes by Lorenzo Chavez

Many residents of the U.S. were treated to a bit (or more) of snow this week. Although not exactly convenient for holiday traveling, it does make for a beautiful landscape. And I can’t think of anyone who knows how to celebrate that more than Colorado artist Lorenzo Chavez whose winter landscapes, in particular, have always struck me as nothing short of magical.

Here’s what the artist told us about these landscapes in a 2011 article in Pastel Journal: “Winter is one of my favorite subjects to paint. I get an emotional jolt every time I see the blue-violet shadows on snow or a partially frozen stream, and I’m always grateful to feel the peace of natural things. From the beginning, the natural color, sounds and movement of nature have been and remain inspiring beyond words.”

For all those lucky enough to be in the Denver area in the coming weeks, you can see examples of these wintry works (and more!) in Chavez’s latest solo exhibition—”Favorite Places: 25 years of Painting Colorado Landscapes”—now showing at Elements 5280 Gallery in Greenwood Village. The show, which includes both plein-air and studio paintings of more than 40 Colorado locations, will be running through December 14. You’ll find more information on the gallery’s website:

And right now, you can enjoy more of Chavez’ pastel landscapes in our online gallery here. To read the entire 2011 article, which includes a step-by-step demonstration of his landscape techniques, you’ll find a download of the December 2011 issue of Pastel Journal in our online shop, where you’ll find great holiday sales events.
