Pastel Pick of the Week | Spring is Showtime for Artist Jimmy Wright

Yesterday marked the vernal equinox and indeed, we seem finally to be shaking off a very long winter and welcoming the first signs of spring! Galleries and museums are doing their part to welcome the season with new shows that celebrate light, flowers and gardens, and our own Jimmy Wright—President of the Pastel Society of America and an Editorial Advisory Board member for Pastel Journal—is showing work in three of these festive celebrations:

Enticing Luminosity at the Lesley Heller Workspace (54 Orchard Street, New York City)

Self No 7 (pastel, 25.5 x 19.5) by Jimmy Wright is on display in “Enticing Luminosity”

This exhibition, curated by Olive Ayhens, presents 13 artists who find their inspiration in light. The selected work represents a broad range of media including sculpture, painting, video and installation. Among the featured artists are watercolorists Elisabeth Condon, Nancy Diamond and Olive Ayrens, sculptor Kathy Goodell, and video artist Heidi Kumao. Of Wright’s work, the gallery writes: Jimmy Wright’s use of a heightened palette and bold, lively brushwork make his self portraits glow from within.”

Runs through April 20

Organized by guest curators Franklin Hill Perrell (the NCMA’s former senior curator) and JoAnne Olian (curator emeritus at the Museum of the City of New York), “Garden Party” explores “the imagery of outdoor entertainments and garden parties through paintings, sculpture, costume, fabrics and decorative arts and designs.” The exhibition is organized thematically by season, beginning with spring which features a monumental mural by Robert Kushner. In addition to two of Wright’s paintings, the show includes work by Nell Blaine, Charles Burchfield, Marc Chagall, George Deem, Janet Fish, Jane Freilicher, Martin Johnson Heade, David Hockney, Robert Mapplethorpe, Georgia O’Keeffe, Maurice Prendergast, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist and Louis Comfort Tiffany.
