Pastel Pick of the Week | Studios on the Park Invitational

Congratulations to pastel artist William Hosner, of Traverse City, Mich., on winning the Best of Show Award  in the Studios on the Park Signature Invitational Exhibition in Paso Robles, Calif., which opened May 21 and runs through June 29. The exhibition features the work of 20 of the country’s finest contemporary realist painters, including 16 oil painters, two pastel painters and two watercolor painters. Each artist was invited to submit paintings, for a total of 80 paintings hanging in the show. The Editha Spencer Memorial Best of Show was awarded on the basis of the artist’s body of work on display rather than for one individual painting.

Isabel (pastel) by William T. Hosner, was painted last summer on Hasserot Beach. The painting is one of four pastels that earned the artist Best of Show at the California exhibition.

This year’s juror, celebrated oil painter Quang Ho, of Denver, found the quality of work exceptional across the board, but ultimately gave top prize to Hosner, whose work includes landscapes and figures painted exclusively en plein air in pastel. Hosner said he felt honored just to be included in the impressive exhibition. “The work in the show was scary good,” he said, “and when Quang Ho announced my name I nearly fell off my chair.”

Further congratulations to pastel artist, Kim Lordier, whose landscape, Evening on the Slough, was one of eight paintings to earn an Award of Excellence.
