Still Lifes in Reflection | David Stickel

David Stickel’s watercolor paintings create drama and mystery through carefully rendered views. Sometimes his paintings make you feel like you’re trying to solve a mind-bending puzzle. To experience this sensation firsthand, just take a closer look at one of his window reflection pieces, below, and spend a few minutes really considering what’s in front of you: Which of those objects are behind the glass? Which are being reflected from the other side of the street?

It’s this interplay between different scenes that begs to be “solved” in your mind’s eye, and it’s also what draws Stickel to paint reflections over and over. “They tell a story,” he says. “There’s a lot of mystery that goes along with them.”
