7 Eco-Friendly Art Products

Portfolios
Star Products’ Ecosmart Dura-Tote Color Portfolios are 100 percent recyclable and contain post-consumer waste material. The company is also in the process of developing an “Earth Friendly” line of portfolios and filing products made from 100 percent recycled fiber, which contain at least 30 percent post-consumer waste material. Prices range from $13.95 to $19.99.

Daler-Rowney’s Earthbound Sketchbooks, Journals and Portfolios are another option, available in hard- and wire-bound formats. Also available are handmade portfolios with protective interior flaps and acid-free lining. They’re made with durable Kraft paper covers and contain speckle-tone recycled (and acid-free) paper. Sketchbooks are $12.95 to $25.95; $14.95 to $19.95 for the journals; and $14.95 to $36.95 for the portfolios.

Easels
Richeson & Company has developed a new line of lyptus easels made from a renewable wood that’s quickly gaining popularity for its sustainability. In contrast to oak, lyptus continues to grow after being harvested. It’s also harder than oak, the standard easel wood. The Lobo easel design (above), most practical for watercolor artists, runs $243.80, and the lyptus print racks (at left) are $138.70 to $214.20.

Other companies, such as Blick Art Materials, also sell lyptus easels. Learn more about lyptus easels.

Paint
Wyland Ecological Art Studio, courtesy of Martin/F. Weber, includes a line of ecological acrylic paints, brushes, painting kits, brush cleaner and DVDs by the host of the TV series Wyland’s Art Studio. The popular conservation artist, famous for his murals of whales and dolphins, hand-selected these 14 eco-friendly (meaning they don’t contain solvents) artist acrylic colors, ideal for creating his marine paintings. $6.99 per 60-milliliter tube; $2.99 to $19.99 for the brushes; $69.99 for the Whale Tail Painting Kit; $49.99 for the DVDs.

Papers
Strathmore recently introduced its first line of artist recycled papers to hit the market since 1972. The company’s newest paper, designed for use with charcoal ($4.15 to $9.95 per pad), contains tree-friendly fibers, cotton and hemp. Other eco-friendly papers include a recycled sketch pad ($10.80), made from 30 percent post-consumer fiber content; and the Windpower watercolor pad ($6.30 to $24.50), manufactured with wind-generated electricity.

Fabriano’s White Ecological Artist Paper (for drawing) is acid-free, made with 100 percent post-consumer recycled cellulose. Its slightly marked surface is whiter than common recycled paper. For each ton of paper produced, the use of recycled cellulose saves 15 trees. Pads run less than $19.95; sheets are under $1.60.

Legion Paper’s eco-friendly watercolor paper is made chlorine-free, with 100 percent cotton fibers, in a hydro-power-generated mill. $5.11 to $10.91 per sheet.
