A Passion for Watercolor | Kristi Grussendorf

A perennial student of watercolor, artist Kristi Grussendorf finds endless opportunities for artistic growth. In fact, she happily admits to being a workshop junkie. “I’ve been lucky enough to take workshops with such masters as Carl Purcell, Carla O’Connor, Stephen Quiller, Alvaro Castagnet and Richard Stephens,” she says. “There’s a little something of each of them in my work.”

But Grussendorf’s passion for exploring all facets of watercolor doesn’t stop with the “who’s who” list of instructors with whom she’s studied. “I try to expand on all the new ideas and methods I’ve been taught,” she says. “I continue to be amazed when something finally sinks in for me. It certainly isn’t because I’ve never heard it before; it’s just that the conditions were right at that moment for me to finally understand.”

As a result of her determined quest to improve her skill set, Grussendorf’s work has changed significantly over the years. “Not so much in terms of subject matter or style,” she says, “but because I’ve become a better painter; the change has come through growth. And even though I continue to practice and add techniques to my toolkit, the fact that I’ve yet to create a piece that I’m totally satisfied with tells me I’m still growing.”
