The Portrait That Inspired a Winning Abstract Painting

In the September 2011 issue of The Artist’s Magazine, we celebrate Diane Schmidt‘s painting, At Loose Ends, which was a finalist in our 27th Annual Art Competition.

“My realistic paintings of the figure influence my abstract works, which are based on ideas I have about people,” said Schmidt. “One of my portraits, entitled Matt, a Multifaceted Man (below), inspired At Loose Ends (above). I used the same colors and general design format. A bit of unraveling that’s present in the portrait became one of the ideas for the looping line work in this piece.”
