The Pastel 100 Competition

Sponsored by The Pastel Journal, America’s leading magazine devoted to pastel artists , this annual competition offers cash, prizes and publicity to its lucky and talented winners.

The deadline for this competition has passed. All winners will be notified by December 31, 2011. The results will not otherwise be made public until they are published in The Pastel Journal (April 2012 issue). See below for information on prizes, the jurors and notification. CATEGORIES & JURORS

Landscape & Interior—Richard McKinley

Richard McKinley www.mckinleystudio.com/artist.html has been a professional artist for 38 years and a teacher more than 35. He’s a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and Northwest Pastel Society; a Signature Distinguished Pastelist with the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and a member of the Oil Painters of America. In 2010, he was inducted into the Pastel Society of America’s Hall of Fame. McKinley is a regular columnist and blogger for The Pastel Journal magazine, and the author of the new book Pastel Pointers (North Light Books, 2010). He is an avid plein air painter, and a popular workshop instructor.

Portrait/Figure—Margaret Dyer

Margaret Dyer (www.margaretdyer.com) of Atlanta, has been enchanted by the human figure since art school in the 1970s. “I found something in life I loved—the challenge to draw the living, breathing, continuously moving landscape of the human body,” she says. The award-winning artist has been featured in a variety of art publications, including The Artist’s Magazine and The Pastel Journal. Her work has been part of numerous solo and group shows, and has been selected for private collections around the world. Dyer will be one of the workshop instructors at the upcoming International Association of Pastel Societies convention in June 2011.

Still Life/Floral—Peter Seltzer

Peter Seltzer (www.peterseltzerfineart.com) has earned a number of awards for his art, among them four gold and three silver medals in major exhibitions, including the annual shows of the Pastel Society of America and Allied Artists of America, as well as several prizes in previous Pastel competitions. His work in pastel and oil can be found in public, private, corporate and academic collections including the New Britain Museum of American Art, HarvardUniversity and the Butler Institute of American Art, which also hosted a solo show of his work. His work has appeared in a variety of art publications, including The Pastel Journal and several fine art books. He lives in Woodbury, Conn. is paintings can be seen

Animal/Wildlife—Dawn Emerson

Dawn Emerson (www.dawnemerson.com) of Terrebonne, Ore., moved west in 1984 and was soon inspired by the big skies, open spaces, herds of horses, rivers and mountains. She has studied pastel with celebrated artists Harley Brown and Albert Handell. “I strive to blend my love of eastern with western approaches to painting by combining ink with pastel,” says Emerson. “I’m currently exploring ways of combining the textural potential of printmaking and monoprinting with pastel.” Emerson, who has been a recipient of The Pastel Journal Best of Show award in the Pastel 100, enjoys painting figural subjects and landscape as well as wildlife. She teaches her dynamic painting techniques workshops at venues across the country. Her work is represented by the Mockingbird Gallery and Atelier 6000 in Bend, Ore., and New Editions Gallery in Lexington, Ky.

Abstract/Non-objective—Cecily Kahn

Cecily Kahn is a native New Yorker whose work reflects the angularity and exciting chaos of city life. As the daughter of artists Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason, she grew up surrounded by art, eventually choosing to pursue her own career in the field. Kahn earned her BFA in 1981 from the Rhode Island School of Design, in Providence, and also studied abroad in Italy at the International School of Graphics in Venice and the Calcografia Nazionale in Rome. Her work has been exhibited widely and has been reviewed for such publications as Art in America, The New York Times and d’Art International. She currently keeps a studio in both Maine and New York City. She’s a member of the American Abstract Artists group and Chair of the Board of Advisors for The Painting Center, a non-profit exhibition space in New York. Her work is represented by Lohin Geduld Gallery in New York and ThomasDeansGallery in the TulaArtCenter in Atlanta.

 

 

 

JUDGING
Entries will be prejudged and finalists will be chosen by the magazine staff. Award winners and honorable mentions will be selected by the jurors named above. All properly prepared entries will be viewed and judged. The jurors and editors reserve the right to recategorize the entries.

NOTIFICATIONS
All winners will be notified by December 31, 2011. The results will not otherwise be made public until they are published in The Pastel Journal (April 2012 issue). Non-winning entrants will not be individually notified of the results. Your cancelled check or credit-card charge will be notification for receipt of your entry. To be notified directly of your entry’s receipt, please ship using a trackable method such as FedEx or UPS.
