CATEGORIES & JURORS

Landscape & Interior— Liz Haywood-Sullivan

Liz Haywood-Sullivan is a landscape painter based along coastal Massachusetts. She conducts workshops on pastel painting and the business of art, and is a sought after judge. Her paintings are represented by Vose Galleries of Boston and Montana Trails Gallery in Bozeman, MT. She currently she serves as the Vice President of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) and is the IAPS representative to ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials). Haywood-Sullivan has been a signature member of the Pastel Society of America since 1998, and holds signature memberships in the Connecticut Pastel Society and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. She’s also a member of the Salmagundi Club of New York and the Academic Artists Association. Her paintings appeared in two books released in 2011 from North Light Books: Painting Sunlight and Shadow with Pastel by Maggie Price and Art Journey America: Landscapes edited by Kathryn Kipp. The artist also has just produced three instructional videos on painting skies, water and greens coming out in 2012 as part of ArtistsNetwork.tv, and she’s currently working on a pastel book for North Light Books scheduled for release in 2013.

Portrait/Figure—Alain Picard

Alain Picard earned a B.A. in illustration from Western Connecticut State University, and went on to study at the Art Student’s League in New York City. His work has been featured in a variety of art publications, including The Artist’s Magazine and Pastel Journal. He has garnered top awards throughout the Northeast in major exhibitions including the Portrait Society of America, the Hudson Valley Art Association, the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, the Connecticut Pastel Society and the Pastel Society of America. Alain is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America as well as the Connecticut Pastel Society where he serves as President. In 2004, The Artist’s Magazine highlighted Alain as one of 20 contemporary artists “On the Rise.” He later won the Best Portfolio Award at the 2009 Portrait Society of America Conference in Washington, D.C. He’s a frequent workshop instructor and demonstrator for art associations, schools, galleries and museums, and was recently invited to demonstrate a portrait in pastel at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He lives with his wife and two sons in Southbury, Connecticut.

Still Life/Floral—Anne McGrory

Anne McGrory, a signature member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA), is an award-winning painter from New Hampshire. Her work has been shown in many national exhibits, including those of the Pastel Society of America, the American Artists Professional League, and the Art Renewal Center’s Annual ARC Salon. She was twice a finalist in the international competition Blossom: Art of Flowers. McGrory’s work has been published in the Pastel Journal as a first place award winner in the Still Life & Floral category (April 2011) and as a featured artist in the June 2011 issue. She received the Herman Marguiles Award For Excellence in the PSA’s 38th Annual show in September of 2010 as well as the Flora Giffuni Memorial Award for Pastel from The American Artists Professional League in November of 2011. Her work is represented by Galerie d’Orsay in Boston.

Animal/Wildlife—Sandy Byers

Sandy Byers (www.sandybyers.com) left a career in the software industry in 2002 to pursue a full-time art career. Two years later, she entered her first competition, the Pastel 100, and won two awards. Her work has continued to be recognized with awards in national and international juried shows and competitions, such as The Artist’s Magazine’s Annual Competition and the Richeson 75, and with feature articles in various art publications. Although Byers has worked in a variety of media, her primary focus is oils and pastels. Many of her paintings feature the landscape and wildlife in and around her home on Whidbey Island in Washington State. Byers is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the Pastel Society of the West Coast and the Northwest Pastel Society. She is also passionately dedicated to animal welfare organizations.

Abstract/Non-objective—Jennifer Gardner

Born and raised in England, Jennifer Gardner (www.jennifergardner.com) moved to the United States in 1999 where she set aside her legal career to pursue her love of painting on a full-time basis. She paints exclusively with pastel to paint abstracted renderings of land- and cityscapes. Her work is part of private and commercial collections in the United States, South America, Asia and Europe. A Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Gardner’s work has been featured in a variety of magazines, books and online resources for artists. She has received major awards in the Pastel 100 and The Artist’s Magazine Annual Competition. Her work has been shown in national juried exhibitions across the United States and is represented by galleries in Acton, Mass.; Newburyport, Mass.; and Bald Head Island, N.C.

PROSPECTUS

ELIGIBILITY

Artists can be from anywhere in the world but must be age 16 or older. Work must be at least 80% soft pastel; no oil pastel. Nupastels and other “harder” pastels are considered soft pastels. The contest is open to artists in the U.S. and abroad. All works must be original. Compositions based on published material or other artists’ work are NOT considered original and are not eligible. Paintings executed in a workshop under another artist‘s supervision or paintings based on another person’s photograph (even if it’s copyright-free) are NOT eligible. Employees or associates of F+W Media, Inc., Jack Richeson & Co. Inc., or their immediate families may not enter. The Pastel Journal reserves the right to reject work deemed unsuitable for publication or that does not meet above criteria. Work previously published in a national publication or receiving an award at a national-level exhibition at the time of submission to this contest is not eligible.


PREPARING YOUR ENTRY

You may enter files online or via regular mail. All digital files submitted via regular mail must be accompanied by an Official entry form. You may enter work in any and all categories; there is no limit to the number of images you may enter. You may mail all your entries in on one CD. Please include a separate sheet that gives the title and dimensions of each image. The titles of the images on the CD must match the titles on the sheet. The file format must be JPEG. If your work is selected for the top 100, we will contact you about sending a high-res replacement. Incomplete entry forms and information sheets, and improperly marked CDs will be disqualified. Slides will not be accepted.

FEES AND PAYMENT
All entries are $20 per image. A credit card number and signature, check or money order for the required jury fee (in U.S. funds drawn on a U.S. bank) must accompany entry. You may send one check to cover all entries. There will be a $10 charge for returned checks or declined credit cards. Credit cards will be charged within 90 days of contest deadline. Charge will appear as “F+W Contests.”

MATERIALS
If you submit your entries offline, please note that CDs will not be returned (so have a duplicate made for your own files). Pastel Journal will not be responsible for the loss, damage or return of any CDs submitted to the competition.

JUDGING
Entries will be prejudged and finalists will be chosen by the magazine staff. Award winners and honorable mentions will be selected by the jurors named above. All properly prepared entries will be viewed and judged. The jurors and editors reserve the right to recategorize the entries.

NOTIFICATIONS
All winners will be notified by October 31, 2012. The results will not otherwise be made public until they are published in Pastel Journal (April 2013 issue). Non-winning entrants will not be individually notified of the results. Your cancelled check or credit-card charge will be notification for receipt of your entry. To be notified directly of your entry’s receipt, please ship using a trackable method such as FedEx or UPS.
