North Light Books’ hardbound showcase of the best in contemporary watercolors
artwork eligibility
Painting is the process of finding continual “creative solutions.” These can be small and may pass unnoticed (How do I make that color more neutral without making mud?), or perhaps a painting crisis that needs a major all-encompassing solution (This painting isn’t working!). Your entry should in some way represent one or both of these processes in a way that you can describe. We will be looking for excellence as well as a variety of styles and subjects. If you’ve had a recent breakthrough painting that brought you an a-ha! moment, this would be ideal. However, we also want to include examples of everyday creativity in areas such as finding creative compositions, solving color problems, incorporating mistakes, using unusual tools, etc. If selected, you will be asked to write about the creative solution(s) you came up with for your painting, whether large or small. The dominant medium must be watercolor, but some minor use of other media may be acceptable.
Submissions
Digital images must be submitted online or on CD ROM or DVD (please label the disks with your name, email and address) and accompanied by a color printout. For judging purposes, these images must be high quality, in RGB color mode, JPEG format, and 72dpi. Digital files submitted by mail must be labeled with your last name, first name, the entry number (should correspond to the number on the entry form), with no punctuation marks until the file extension (example: Wolf Rachel 3.tiff). Disks will not be returned.
selection process
The editorial staff of North Light Books will review all submissions and select a group of about 600 semi-finalists from which Rachel Wolf will make the final selections. Art will be selected on the basis of general quality as well as suitability for this particular publication.
